I started out as an Illustrator. I did illustrations for books, posters, signs, editorial work for newspapers, you name it. It came to my attention that my illustrations were frequently turned over to designers and there integrated into their layouts. From time to time I would find myself disappointed with that final presentation.

I started to put more attention into the whole project as opposed to just my illustrations. I'd find myself talking with the project designers and on occasion making suggestions. You can probably figure out what how well received that was.

The solution seemed to be in doing the job from start to finish myself. That decision made I started off on what's proved to be a lifelong love affair with graphic design.

I approach every job (large or small) as a working design that has a job to do. If a job looks great but is impossible to read (a situation we've all seen a lot of over the last decade or so), it's not good graphic design. How about a bright and colorful layout with type that's too small for the senior audience it's meant for. Perhaps it's a restaurant with a stylish black and white ad placement featuring a photograph that frankly doesn't look appetizing in black and white. One of the interesting differences I've identified between fine art and graphic design is this: fine art is about satisfying the artist and graphic design is about reaching a specific audience.

There are designers that have a certain look, you see a design and you go oh there's one of So and So's pieces. I've tried to approach things a little differently. I start by reaching an understanding of the project, ask what's the message, who is it trying to speak to. Once I understand the goals the project will often suggest a look for itself. My slogan is “graphic design that works”, another way of expressing that would be “a good design is a hardworking design”. That's what I aim for. Contact me and lets see how we can get your project working for you.
